Friedrich Stromeyer discovered cadmium. Camuim comes from the Latin word cadmia, which means calamine. It also comes from the same greek word kadmeia that has the same meaning. In 1817, an impurity in some samples of zinc carbonate was the start of cadmium. He got some more money to finish up the discovery. He finally isolated some cadmium metal. Friedrich did it by roasting an reduction of the sulphide.
